PATIENT RECOMMENDATIONS  following a surgical procedure

  • Bite down on the gauze and keep it under pressure for 20 minutes, this is necessary to control the initial bleeding. If the bleeding persists repeat this action.
  • It is not recommended to eat or drink for at least 2 hours after the procedure
  • Do not rinse your mouth intensively for 24 hours after the procedure. Starting the next day you should rinse your mouth with a 0,12% - 0,2% chlorhexidine solution (that can be purchased at your local pharmacy). You should rinse twice a day, 30 minutes after you have brushed your teeth for 60 seconds. This should be performed for 7 days.
  • You should brush your teeth twice a day as oral hygiene is extremely important in order to avoid inflammation of the wound. Avoid injuring the wound while brushing your teeth.
  • Hot food and beverages, and also alcoholic and carbonated beverages should be avoided. Soft cool and nutritious food is recommended.
  • Smoking should be avoided on the day of the procedure and reduced to a minimum during the following days.
  • After the anaesthesia wears off it is normal to experience slight pain. In case of intensive pain, it is recommended to use the painkiller that your doctor has prescribed (usually it is tbl. ibuprofen 400-600mg or tbl. paracetamol 500-1000mg). Aspirin should be avoided. Painkillers should be used only when necessary and no more than 3-4 times a day.
  • Surgical procedures may induce swelling which peaks at about 4-5 days after the procedure. In order to prevent swelling it is necessary to place an ice pack (that should be wrapped in a towel) extraorally onto the operated area. The ice pack should be held for 20 minutes, then removed for 20 minutes. This should be repeated for several hours after the surgical procedure. Swelling can also make it difficult to open your mouth, which will be back to normal in a few days.
  • If the bleeding persists, a new sterile gauze should be placed onto the wound and held there under pressure for 30 minutes, an ice pack should also be placed extraorally at the same time. This procedure can be repeated multiple times. If intensive bleeding persists for more than 12 hours after the procedure you should contact your doctor.
  • It is normal to experience a slight increase in body temperature after the surgery
  • Intensive physical activity should be avoided for a few days after the procedure
  • It is possible that small haematomas appear under the skin near the site of surgery. They should disappear in 1 – 2 weeks after the procedure.
